Family-owned tax services since 1965
Family-owned tax services since 1965, TaxSlayer's story began when Aubrey Rhodes Sr. founded Rhodes-Murphy & Co. in Augusta, Georgia. Over the years, his tax preparation business has evolved into an innovative software development company that still embodies its founder's commitment to its employees, customers, and community.
In 1980, Aubrey Rhodes Sr. passed away and his son, Jimmy Rhodes, was elected president. Under new leadership, the company added an income tax school to teach potential employees tax preparation skills. In 1984, Carl Rhodes and Zane D. Christopher Jr. joined Jimmy as principals of the company.
In 2016, Jimmy's son, Brian Rhodes, was elected president of the company while the former principals transitioned to the Board of Directors. Brian's brother, Scott Rhodes, and his cousin, Ashleigh Rhodes Wilder, also became principals in 2016.
From tax prep to software development
The company's venture into software development began in 1989. A new tax software enabled the Rhodes-Murphy offices to complete tax returns on the computer instead of by hand, a revolutionary step that improved efficiency. The software increased the number of returns that could be completed and raised the market price for services. When the software was released in 1991, it was named TaxSlayer Pro after the original e-mail address of Jimmy Rhodes.
TaxSlayer continues to create modern ways to offer financial services. An online DIY version of TaxSlayer Pro was released under the name TaxSlayer in 1998. This allowed individuals to complete their tax returns with the help of an easy-to-use software.
In 2017 TaxSlayer launched Workful to help small business owners streamline their day-to-day operational tasks. Workful consolidates payroll and human resources into a single cloud-based solution, resulting in a unified workflow that allows owners to focus on the bigger picture - owning their business rather than managing it.
That same year, TaxSlayer took a bold step forward with the introduction of LegalSpark. This online service provides fast, affordable, legal advice. LegalSpark connects consumers with experienced lawyers in their area for 20 minutes of advice regarding a single legal matter, saving them the hassle and expense of engaging with law firms or paying an ongoing retainer.
